Teaching philosophy

In my experience, I believe that the best way to learn is through teaching. When it comes to my teaching philosophy, I prioritize active learning, where students are actively engaged in the learning process. Rather than simply presenting information and expecting students to memorize it, I aim to create an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussions, and work on hands-on activities. I also believe that it's important to focus not just on what students learn, but how they learn. This involves understanding the different learning styles of individual students and tailoring my teaching approach to meet their needs.

My ultimate goal is to inspire students and help them develop a passion for the subject matter. I believe that when students are truly interested and engaged in what they're learning, they're more likely to retain information and apply it in their future studies and careers. In addition, I aim to equip students with critical thinking and self-learning skills, which will serve them well beyond the classroom.

Earth and planetary materials

Minerals serve as a crucial source of raw materials and play an essential role in our understanding of the solar system. They are a driving force behind many national economies, providing valuable resources for industries worldwide. Crystals, which demonstrate nature's order and symmetry, have been a significant area of study in mineralogy. Their study has allowed us to better understand atomic size and arrangement in compounds, enabling us to make predictions about the past, present, and future state of our planet.

However, minerals are not only scientifically significant, but they can also be incredibly beautiful. From the iridescent colors of opals to the stunning complexity of quartz formations, minerals showcase nature's exquisite craftsmanship. In my course, I strive to teach students about the scientific facts behind minerals while also fostering an appreciation for their inherent beauty. In this way, students can develop a deeper understanding and connection to the natural world.

In-class activity

To foster active learning among my students, I designed a series of engaging in-class activities, such as Mineral Cup, Mineral Cosplay, and Mineral Poem Writing. These activities have been well-received, igniting a contagious passion for the subject. Witnessing the students showcase their talents and observing their curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm has been incredibly encouraging.

Outreach

Outreach is an indispensable component of geoscience. Throughout my professional trajectory, I have enthusiastically contributed to and led diverse outreach initiatives. These endeavors have aimed to increase public awareness regarding the significance of geoscience and foster channels for transmitting scientific findings to non-expert audiences. Additionally, they have served as a platform to promote diversity and inclusivity within academia.
